Mountains That Dwarf Everything Else

Mountains That Dwarf Everything Else

Pakistan is home to K2 — the world's second-highest peak and, by most mountaineering accounts, the hardest. Beyond K2, five of the world's 14 eight-thousanders sit within Pakistan's borders. Three of the planet's great mountain ranges — the Himalaya, the Karakoram, and the Hindu Kush — converge here in a single, staggering landscape. The result is more dramatic high-altitude scenery per square kilometre than anywhere else on Earth.

The Karakoram Highway

The Karakoram Highway

Built across some of the most hostile terrain on the planet, the Karakoram Highway is the highest paved international road in the world — reaching 4,693m at Khunjerab Pass on the Chinese border. Driving it is an experience in itself: the Indus River gorge, the junction of three mountain ranges, Nanga Parbat appearing through a gap in the valley, then Rakaposhi and Hunza opening up ahead of you. It is one of the great road journeys of the world.

Unmatched Hospitality

Unmatched Hospitality

Pakistani culture places guests above all else — the concept of 'mehman nawazi' (guest honour) runs deep. Expect to be invited in for tea before you've asked for directions. Expect meals pressed on you by strangers. Expect the best seat in the room. The British Backpacker Society named Pakistan one of the friendliest countries on earth, and every traveller who visits comes back saying the people were the highlight — not even the mountains.

Fraction of the Cost, None of the Crowds

Fraction of the Cost, None of the Crowds

Nepal has queues on Everest. Patagonia has park reservation lotteries. Switzerland charges European prices. Pakistan offers comparable — arguably superior — mountain scenery at a fraction of the cost and with virtually no tourist queues. The Karakoram is one of the last places on Earth where you can stand in a landscape of this scale and feel genuinely alone in it.

Ancient Civilisations & Living Cultures

Ancient Civilisations & Living Cultures

Pakistan's history stretches back 5,000 years — to the Indus Valley Civilisation at Mohenjo-daro, the Gandhara Buddhist kingdoms at Taxila (where Alexander the Great passed through), Mughal emperors who built Lahore Fort and the Badshahi Mosque, and Silk Road traders who carved petroglyphs across the Karakoram that are still visible today. Living within this history are the Kalash — a pre-Islamic polytheistic community in the Hindu Kush whose festivals and traditions have survived against every historical odds.
